Waken the Giants

In the first semester of my senior year's illustration class, we were allowed to make self-directed projects. We had to state up front what our goal was — what did we want to try/learn/accomplish? My stated goal for this picture was to simulate fur. I wanted to make a big animal look fuzzy.

Even though I made Waken the Giants during class, it doubled as my entry for a competition in college. The theme of the contest was "Waken the Giants". Many of the submissions were suitably epic, but I wanted to do something a little different.
