Fusing & Quilting Back to Front

The conventional method of quilting is to start in the center of a quilt and stitch outward to avoid wrinkles and distortion caused by the application of thread. However, this method does not work for Kestrel's highly detailed, imaginative realism designs. As a result, she had to develop an alternative technique.

In the first half of class, students will fuse together a design (the sailboat pictured above) of fused appliqué fabric. In the second half of class, students will learn Kestrel's method of quilting and use that process to stitch their sailboat quilts.

This process works with any stitch pattern. FMQ is recommended but not required.

Note: This class is not intended to be an introduction to FMQ. Students should already be comfortable quilting via free-motion.
