Fusing & Quilting Back to Front
- Make your very own sailboat art quilt using Kestrel's method of quilting appliqué designs.
The conventional method of quilting is to start in the center of a quilt and stitch outward to avoid wrinkles and distortion caused by the application of thread. However, this method does not work for Kestrel's highly detailed, imaginative realism designs. As a result, she had to develop an alternative technique.
In the first half of class, students will fuse together a design (the sailboat pictured above) of fused appliqué fabric. In the second half of class, students will learn Kestrel's method of quilting and use that process to stitch their sailboat quilts.
This process works with any stitch pattern. FMQ is recommended but not required.
Note: This class is not intended to be an introduction to FMQ. Students should already be comfortable quilting via free-motion.
Kit includes:
- Laser-cut, fusible-backed fabric pieces to make a 15"x15" appliqué quilt top; the design is the sailboat pictured above
- Paper design template
- Number match guide
Students should bring:
- Sewing machine
- FMQ foot
- Fabric scissors (small)
- Thread (whatever you are most comfortable using)
- Sewing machine needles (whatever works best with your machine & thread)
- Batting (18"x18" recommended)
- Backing fabric (at least 18" x 18")
Hardware requirements to be provided by guild:
- Projector with HDMI connection
- Either a projector screen or large, blank, white wall
- Work tables for students
- Extension cords
- Irons (1 iron per 3-4 students, available at their work tables)
