Quilting Back to Front
- Learn Kestrel's method of quilting appliqué designs.
The conventional method of quilting is to start in the center of a quilt and stitch outward to avoid wrinkles and distortion caused by the application of thread. However, this method does not work for Kestrel's highly detailed, imaginative realism designs. As a result, she had to develop an alternative technique.
In this class, students will learn Kestrel's method of free-motion quilting (FMQ). Each student will be provided a kit of cut, fused appliqué fabric to make a 12" x 12" quilt sandwich and will spend the day pracicing Kestrel's technique using their own sewing machines.
This process works with any stitch pattern. FMQ is recommended but not required.
Note: This class is not intended to be an introduction to FMQ. Students should already be comfortable quilting via free-motion.
Kit includes:
- Laser-cut, fusible-backed fabric pieces to make a simple 12"x12" appliqué quilt top
- Paper design template
- Number match guide
Students should bring:
- Sewing machine
- FMQ foot
- Fabric scissors (small)
- Thread (whatever you are most comfortable using)
- Sewing machine needles (whatever works best with your machine & thread)
- Batting (15"x15" recommended)
- Backing fabric (at least 15" x 15")
Hardware requirements to be provided by guild:
- Projector with HDMI connection
- Either a projector screen or large, blank, white wall
